The City of Delray Beach in collaboration with the School District of Palm Beach County’s Office of African, African American, Latino, & Gender Studies and KOP Mentoring Network is sponsoring a Black History Month essay contest for any 5th grade elementary student or 6th grader at Carver Middle schools in Delray Beach.

The purpose of the project is to encourage students’ development of research, writing and critical thinking skills, to build healthy self-esteem and resilience, to build appreciation for multiculturalism, to increase awareness of African American History, to foster creativity as well as to compete for a prize as they acknowledge the relevance of Black History Month.

The subject matter for all essay entries is to highlight the reasons why we should or should not observe Black History Month. Supporting evidence will contribute to the students’ arguments.
